Infant or child abduction — the lockdown that stops an entire hospital.
A Code Pink is the universal hospital alert for a missing or abducted infant or child. When this alarm sounds, every staff member stops what they are doing to secure the building. This alert activates a specific response plan to ensure no child leaves the premises unauthorized.
When a Code Pink is called, the hospital enters an immediate lockdown. All exterior doors are electronically locked, and elevators often stop working to prevent exit. Security teams and staff monitor all exits to verify everyone leaving the building.
Hospital staff and security will conduct a systematic search of every room, closet, and utility space. If you are in your room during this time, a nurse will likely ask you to stay put and may briefly check your closet or bathroom. Please follow their instructions quickly so they can clear your area and move to the next.
If you are a visitor or patient, remain in your designated area. Do not attempt to leave the building or navigate the hallways during the search. Your cooperation helps staff maintain a clear perimeter and identify anyone who does not belong in a restricted area.
The lockdown remains in effect until security confirms the child is safe or determines the alert was a mistake. Once the situation is resolved, a Clear Code announcement will play over the overhead system. Normal hospital operations, including visiting hours and elevator access, will then resume immediately.
